At Home Learning Ideas
Here are some activity ideas to use with your child whilst you are at home. We ask that you don't forget that all children learn at their own pace and some activities may need to be simplified and others you can make a little more challenging.
We have used household items that you have will hopefully have to keep things simple.
Kitchen Band
Have fun singing songs and make yourself a homemade band.
Use some of the songs linked to Jolly Phonics to use the special sounds (see information below).
- Pan and spoon
- Plastic box with a lid and fill with dried peas or rice
- Elastic bands stretched over a plastic bowl
Make a shop
Simply set up a small table with some items from the cupboard and have a go at playing shop. You can count items, listen for the sounds when asking for the goods and just enjoy talking.
- Items from your cupboard such as tinned food or a packet of cereal
- Pretend money or homemade money (simple cut out circles and draw monetary value on front eg: 20p)
- Plastic box for your cash register
- Shopping bags
- Dressing up clothes or a coat and hat
Number Towers
Build towers and count each item as you place it onto the tower. You can use any of the following or be inventive and think of something unusual.
- Books
- Building blocks
- Cushions
Number Games
Saying numbers in order and having a go at counting one item to one number is the start of children's mathematical experience. Here are some simple ideas of ways to use numbers in a fun way.
- Jump across the room and shout out the number of steps it takes (do it in more than one room and compare the difference)
- Count out the plates or bowls at meal time
- Line up different objects in a line and have a go at counting (it doesn't matter if they skip some when counting it it the experience and watching you model that is important)
- Roll a dice and count the number of spots on the top face then ask your child to 'add one more' (again some children may just use the number names but they are learning through everything they hear , touch and see)
